Brunie Kandora, Stonewall Birches, etching, 8” x 6”
Kandora notes “I like to share a moment of rest on an old stonewall, while hiking through a young birch-wood forest, wondering about the contrast of this time-worn structure and the fast-growing, beautiful birches. The history of the land, the builders, young or old, who collected and carried these rocks, piling them on top of each other and “who” or “what” lives in between those crevices and hollow spaces? This region is dotted with stonewalls, hidden
and exposed, each telling a story. To get a more spontaneous, loose quality to my print I paint the image on a metal plate with syrup and use the sugarlift-aquatint method which gives the work a more painterly image, though the actual work is complicated and requires a considerable investment of time.”
