This fun and engaging online workshop will surely get your creativity flowing. Learn sketching and painting tips and techniques to create lively and beautiful works of art that reveal an integral visual dialog between drawing and painting. These methods and techniques are also great for working up ideas in composition and color for larger paintings in any medium or as an underpainting technique. You may choose to just watch or to sketch and paint along, step-by-step, with noted artist and very popular instructor Robert Carsten, using a combination of pencil, pen and watercolor. Working on a small scale, we’ll create graphite and ink line and watercolor wash paintings from photos. Each week we will focus on a different subject utilizing diverse approaches and techniques.  Photos and a materials list provided via Dropbox, where participants can also share their work.

Week 1: Landscape with Barn (a line and color wash painting): Sketch/paint along or just watch.
Brief introduction to materials, then showing a few paintings with pointers on techniques. Then I will do a painting using pencil, pen and watercolor. I’ll discuss and demonstrate mark making and the various roles pencil and pen perform in this form of mixed media painting. Midway through, any participants who wish to may show their painting for brief critique/commentary.

Week 2: Still Life with Fruit (a line and color wash painting): Sketch/paint along or just watch.
I’ll show a few paintings with pointers on techniques before doing a quick preliminary thumbnail value sketch using pencil and pen. Then I will do a gray-scale (chiaroscuro) underpainting, before adding successive colorwashes and selective line work to complete the painting. Midway through, any participants may show their painting for brief critique/commentary.

Week 3: Country road with Trees (a line and color wash painting): Sketch/paint along or just watch.
I’ll show a few paintings with pointers on techniques before doing a wet-into-wet and wet- over-dry painting, using pencil and pen line work as a foundation. Painting techniques and brushwork discussed and demonstrated. Midway through, any participants may show their painting for brief critique/commentary.

Week 4: Bird in a Natural Setting (a line and color wash painting): Sketch/paint along or just watch.
I’ll show a few paintings with pointers on techniques before doing a painting using a vignette style. I’ll discuss and demonstrate ways to create a balance between unpainted (white or toned paper) and the painted image. Midway through, any participants may show their painting for brief critique or commentary.
