How well do you speak the language of drawing?
Taking the natural world as our cue, participants of this workshop will break down the language of drawing into five components: line, mark, texture, pattern, and shape. Working with an observational process in the studio and on the grounds of the Woodstock School of Art, participants will complete drawing exercises designed to bring focused attention to each of these unique components, and then, through exercises in design and proportion, combine them in new and perhaps unusual ways, much as a musician composes a score.
Topics covered include the sinuous and staccato line, thin and thick calligraphy, dimensional marks, textural marks, organic pattern, shape, design, and proportion. The elements of nature will be our point of departure to discover individual aesthetic taste and preferred level of realism.
In addition to short lectures and demonstrations of the drawing elements, instructor will give individual feedback and demos throughout each working day.
This workshop would be suitable for the beginner as well as the more advanced artist seeking a refresher on the elements of drawing. This is also a useful workshop for any artist desiring a deeper understanding of the language of drawing for application to the studio practice of painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or fiber arts.
