Are you an artist who loves to draw, but can sometimes feel overwhelmed by color? Then this workshop is for you. Working observationally in the studio and on the grounds of the Woodstock School of Art, you’ll enjoy a hands-on approach to finding your way from drawing in black and white to drawing with color, discovering your personal palette in the process. This is not a color theory class but a hands-on color discovery class for people who like to draw.

Class will consist of drawing exercises from studio still life and the WSA grounds (or through the studio windows), instructor demonstrations and short lectures with examples from art history and contemporary art. As you work, you’ll receive individual feedback and demos as needed.

On Day 1 we’ll review the elements of drawing in black and white: line, mark, pattern, texture and shape. Days 2 and 3 will be our entry and hands-on exploration of color through those same premises, culminating in a full color panoramic drawing of the forest. By interpreting your black and white you’ll uncover your personal color aesthetic, the signature of the artist.

This workshop would be suitable for the beginner as well as the intermediate artist seeking a new way to approach color in their process. It can be taken as a follow-up to The Language of Drawing: Black & White or as a stand-alone workshop.
