Art is an expressive language. Impasto is a highly expressive painting technique that uses thick paint applied with a painting knife and/or brush to paper, board or canvas. In this session we’ll explore several different ways to creatively use impasto for dramaticand captivating effects. Brushstrokes and knivestrokes can convey an array of ideas — description, meaning, expression, intent of the artist, speed and confidence in execution, and more. These effects can radically affect mood and design concept, fostering artistically poetic and tactile expressions that reference beauty. We’ll use a variety of motifs in which to explore expressive mark making, texture, color and design. You may work in any drawing or painting medium, but Robert will be working in acrylic, a medium that can achieve many striking effects. Learn to use a subject as a springboard of inspiration and intuitive response. Robert will show and discuss techniques, compositional ideas, light effects, use of color and more to foster our own creativity. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, you’re bound to be inspired as you learn stylistic concepts and practices. You may choose to just watch or to sketch and paint along, step-by-step, with very popular instructor, Robert Carsten. Each week we will see examples and focus on a different aspect of the subject, utilizing diverse approaches and techniques. Reference photos provided via email and Dropbox, where participants can also share zoomclass work or optional homework for written critique. All levels welcome.
