Inspirational, fun and challenging, this class will explore diverse types of abstract painting. Geometric abstraction; abstract expressionism; color field painting; lyrical abstraction and more will be investigated — all with a concentration on expression, composition and color in contemporary painting styles. Robert will show and discuss techniques to procure compositional ideas, drawing tips, methods to achieve volumetric form, texture, and evocative color to spark our creativity. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, you’ll be inspired as you learn about diverse approaches to designing and creating unique paintings. You may work in any drawing or painting medium. Robert will be working in pencil, pen, watercolor and opaque white. You may choose to just watch or to sketch and paint along, step-by-step, with very popular instructor, Robert Carsten. In each of the four classes we will see examples and focus on a different approach, utilizing diverse techniques. Materials list will be provided. In Dropbox, participants can share one optional homework for written critique. All levels welcome.

Mondays, March 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2026
