Second Impressions: Multi-Layer Print Collage

In this printmaking class, students explore multi-layered printmaking techniques to create surreal, personal, or abstract narratives. By repurposing old prints and incorporating recycled materials, students experiment with layering processes using lino blocks, wood blocks, collage paper, and mixed-media elements. Emphasis is placed on combining various printmaking methods—such as relief printing, monoprinting, and collage—to build rich, textured images. The course encourages imaginative storytelling through visual composition, allowing students to reinterpret past works of art into new, expressive forms.

The class begins with a short introduction to fundamental printmaking techniques—relief printing, monoprinting, and collage—along with an overview of materials such as lino blocks, glues, and mixed-media papers. Students also look at a selection of printmaking artists to gain inspiration and understand how different techniques can be used creatively. A demonstration follows, showing how to collage with old prints and previously carved blocks and how to layer prints to create depth and texture. After the demo, the class shifts into hands-on exploration, where students practice carving simple shapes, experiment with printing methods, and explore combining different textures. The session concludes with brief group sharing to reflect on processes and discoveries.
