This two-day workshop will focus on creating abstract compositions using both paper and paint. Come prepared to take an artistic journey in building abstract picture-making skills and developing senses of composition, color, line, space, shape, texture, and value. Working with recycled, purchased, and hand-designed patterned papers, students will build on their unique artistic aesthetics with a philosophy toward seeking new discoveries. This workshop will focus on creative thinking and will help students approach collage-making with the eyes of an artmaker, rather than simply emphasizing technique. The goal is to strengthen students’ confidence in abstract artmaking. Day two of the workshop will explore the expressive potential of décollage. The collage processes are a means of exploring, discovering, and learning, ultimately affirming each student’s distinctive artistic approach.

Group and individual critiques and discussions will focus on the fundamental components of making interesting abstract works as it applies to each student’s work. Both demos and visual lectures will take place frequently during class, providing students with examples.
