This two-day workshop will focus on creating abstract compositions using both paper and paint. Come prepared to take an artistic journey in building abstract picture-making skills and developing senses of composition, color, line, space, shape texture, and value. Working with recycled, purchased, and hand-designed patterned papers, students will build on their unique artistic aesthetics with a philosophy toward seeking new discoveries. This workshop will focus on creative thinking and will help students approach collage-making with the eyes of an artmaker, rather than simply emphasizing technique. The goal is to strengthen students’ confidence in abstract artmaking. Day two of the workshop will explore the expressive potential of décollage, the process of removing or unglueing pieces from an original image—essentially the opposite of collage. Both décollage and collage processes are a means of exploring, discovering, and learning, ultimately affirming each student’s distinctive artistic approach. This workshop is not recommended for beginners. Students should have knowledge of Modern art and an understanding of the basic principles of art.
