Despite its obstruse name, Movable Collagraph is an easy technique to add to your printmaking toolkit. It lives in the fecund zone between monotype and collagraph by using textures that are not permanently adhered to a plate. Rather, the textures can be inked (or not), can come and go from the composition, and can co-exist with the marks and shapes made with monotype and/or other techniques. Images made with Movable Collagraph can be simple or complex, but always induce a state of discovery in the maker. In this 2-day workshop, students will learn the basic techniques of movable collagraph by working with textures, stencils, and direct mark-making on a plexiglass plate. We will touch on monotype and trace monotype as well, along with inking and chine collé. In addition, students will gain an understanding of general printmaking procedures, graphics studio practices, and safety protocols. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts about composition, formal and conceptual elements/ideas, motivation, presentation, and historical and contemporary prints and printmakers.
