Monotype, Trace Monotype, and Movable Collagraph

Historically a rather obscure process used primarily for the edification of the artist, the unique prints of Monotype, Trace Monotype, and Movable Collagraph have nonetheless captured the imaginations of contemporary artists and collectors alike. Unlike other printmaking techniques that can produce exact copies of the same image (etching, for example), the monotype (and its related techniques of trace and movable collagraph) is a unique art object more akin to a painting.

In this revealing and in-depth workshop, students will be introduced to the delights, challenges, and possibilities of these unique printmaking processes. Gaining confidence with various printmaking materials such as ink, image-making methods, tools, paper, and terminology will inspire artists at every stage of their creative pursuit. Discussions about composition, formal and conceptual ideas, motivation, presentation, and contemporary prints and printmakers will be encouraged.

In addition, students will gain an understanding of general printmaking procedures, graphics studio practices, and safety protocols. All students will gain a deeper appreciation for the unique collaborative environment by participating in studio cleanup, stewardship, and exhibition opportunities.

No prior printmaking experience necessary, but a curiosity for artistic exploration among community in a historic art school is required.  Ages 16+
