From its perch above the Hudson River, Frederic Church’s Olana stands as a witness to history and the memories of those who have lived here. The river and its surroundings have inspired artists for centuries, with its natural beauty and composition of mountains, water, trees, and sky. Understanding how to portray these elements with paint is what the “plein air” or outdoor artist strives for so that they can create an expression of what Church’s fellow 19th century landscape painter George Inness called a “sense of place”. Sense of place is a memory or an impression that inspires us to see that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

Join Keith Gunderson for the opportunity to express a connection to landscapes both seen and imagined through this plein air workshop at Olana State Historic Site with The Olana Partnership. Participants will be inspired by the breathtaking views and gain insights into composition, color, and finish. Keith will provide methods to help organize participants’ new or developed plein air painting practices. Grab a French easel and oil painting supplies and enjoy this outdoor adventure in art.

Registrants who are interested in joining an add-on FREE tour of the exhibition Afterglow Frederic Church and the Landscape of Memory can email education@olana.org to learn more!
