Interpreting the Forest Through Drawing and Collage

Workshop day 1 begins with a series of drawing exercises in line, texture and collaged shape to find the organizing patterns of the forest. Using watercolor, colored pencil and gouache, participants will then paint a small personal library of papers for use in collage. On workshop day 2 participants will have dedicated studio time to design and complete a large drawing or a series of smaller drawings, using their sketches and thumbnails from Saturday as a point of departure. This will be an informal day of individualized studio work with 1:1 instructor feedback, culminating in a group critique and discussion. Instructor will give demonstrations and short lectures using examples from contemporary and historic art sources. Combining general premises with individually tailored instruction, this workshop meets each participant where they’re at. It is most suitable for beginning to intermediate level artists.

By successful completion of this workshop, students will:
• Draw and organize the forest from observation using the elements of line, texture and collaged shape.
• Discover techniques for creating texture, depth and mood based on observation.
• Create a personalized library of colored, textured papers for use in collage.
• Explore variations on a theme through a thumbnail process to create pictures that embody personal aesthetics.
