This class will spend four weeks diving into the work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Students will study her life and art, examining the aspects of her experience that most influenced her work. We will pay particular attention to her self-portraits and the “I paint myself because I am often alone, and I am the subject I know best.” We will look at the cultural specificity of her work while being careful not to appropriate her signifiers as our own. We will then draw on what we have learned, in order to create a number of small art works as well as a final self-portrait in a magical realist style.
Students will be learn more about the life and influences of Friday Kahlo. They will understand the genre of magical realism and the importance of understanding culturally specific signifiers vs appropriation. They will create three specific art works using the work of Frida Kahlo as a springboard.
