Foundations in Printmaking: Linocut Relief

$170.00

2 in stock

SKU: FIP2 10/6/2022 - 11/3/2022 Category: Classes and Workshops

Although it could be argued that handprints in the caves at Lascaux are the first relief prints ever made by humans, recorded history indicates that the relief technique was used by the Egyptians over 4000 years ago. The Chinese perfected the techniques in the 1st and 2nd centuries, passing the knowledge along the ancient trade routes, eventually making their way to Europe where Gutenberg put his famous press to work and ushered in the dawn of mass communication. The point is, we’ve been reproducing images using relief techniques for a very long time.

In this 4-week class, students will learn the basic techniques of relief printmaking by carving, inking, and printing linoleum blocks. We will make single and multi-color prints as well as discuss tips for using chine collé, making editions, different paper varieties, and using alternative block materials.

In addition, students will gain an understanding of general printmaking procedures, graphics studio practices, and safety protocols. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts about composition, formal and conceptual elements/ideas, motivation, presentation, and historical and contemporary prints and printmakers.

No prior printmaking experience necessary, but a commitment to artistic exploration is required. Ages 16+
