Drawing is an essential tool for artistic expression, and this class is a deep dive into the components of the language of drawing. Working with an observational process in the studio and en plein-air on the grounds of the Woodstock School of Art, participants will explore the language of line, mark, pattern and shape through mixed media black & white (Session 6) and color (Session 7) drawings. Then, much as a musician composes a score, they will combine these elements in uniquely individual ways.
Topics covered include the sinuous and staccato line, thin and thick calligraphy, dimensional marks, textural marks, organic pattern, shape and proportion. During Session 7 we will build on skills learned in Session 6, applying them to drawing with color mediums.
Class premises build over the weeks through discussion, demonstration and hands-on exercises. Students will draw from studio still life or from nature, on the WSA grounds. Weekly critiques will also address elements of picture making such as composition, hierarchy and design, to discover individual aesthetic taste and preferred level of realism.
