Cut and Painted Paper

More than a collage class, our goal will be to create a balance between playful experimentation and careful study of composition to create dynamic painted paper works. Students will begin by painting loosely on paper, not over-thinking, just enjoying the act of applying color and texture using palette knives, sponges, trowels as well as traditional brushes. Once students have built up a collection of papers, we will discuss composition by studying the work of masters such as Titian, Cezanne, Juan Gris, as well as more contemporary painters. We will also be discussing methods of creating a sense of movement, excitement and energy in students’ work. Students will then begin cutting up or tearing their painted papers and experimenting with design by playing and rearranging shapes on their work surface.
