Deceptively simple, though engaging enough for a lifetime of exploration, the Collagraph printmaking technique is used to produce images using textural materials. A collagraph marries the language of collage to the repeatable matrix of a traditional printmaking plate, enabling both one-of-a-kind works on paper and editions. Considered both an Intaglio and a Relief method of printmaking, Collagraph invites experimentation.
In this 2-day Collagraph workshop, we will explore a variety of plate-making formats, textural materials, and printing techniques. Inking, over-printing techniques, Chine Collé, and paper varieties will be explored in the creation of unique, personal images. In addition, students will gain an understanding of general printmaking procedures, graphics studio practices, and safety protocols. Students will be encouraged to participate in ongoing discussions about composition, formal and conceptual elements/ideas, motivation, presentation, and contemporary prints and printmakers.
