Drawing can be defined and approached in many ways. This class concentrates on the basics of observational drawing with equal emphasis on the development of perceptual and tactile skills. Those who are new to drawing often confront a simple but confusing dilemma; how do I start a drawing? This class aims to de-mystify the process using traditions such as “sighting” techniques, perspective, and gesture drawing. Your perception will deepen along with your technical skill. Although the focus of the class is on drawing what you see, students become aware that it is the analysis of familiar objects into abstract components that will get you there. In class, I often refer to this insight from artist Ellsworth Kelly who said, “If you could turn off the mind and see only with the eyes, ultimately everything becomes abstract.” You will benefit if you have never drawn before or if you would like to refresh existing skills.
Classes will take the form of lecture/demo followed by studio work; trial and error is encouraged! Each day will have a group critique; a dynamic way for students to learn from each other. Over the years I have found it helpful to critique student drawings with tissue overlays, making suggestions just as specific as possible. Question and answer periods are encouraged throughout. Additional technical information on optional papers and tools for further study is offered.
