“Abstraction allows us to see with the mind what we cannot see physically with our eyes. Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an explosion into unknown areas.” Arshile Gorky
“It is a mysterious language in tune with the vibrations, the life itself, of color. In this area, there are new and infinite possibilities.” Sonia Delaunay
“Sometimes a drawing starts to relate very directly to experiences felt, other times it just goes off on a tangent that you can’t really articulate. ” Susan Rothenberg
“Drawings are dramatic events.” Jonathon Lasker
Aside from exemplifying what is possible, abstract drawing is fun. This one hour per week online course offers a joy ride for both a beginner and a seasoned artist. Each week, I present abstraction through international artist books to view and discuss formal elements such as line quality, movement, form and color. We acquire the language of abstraction through looking, drawing and discussing its striking and thrilling complexity. We will wend through an alternate tool and materials universe. From the delight of the doodle to the mighty power of line to densities of pigment, the endeavor of abstract drawing is analogous to prospecting for surprises. What could be more irresistible?
With pleasure, I offer demonstrations of unusual ways to utilize wet and dry materials. From delicate, velvety wisps to raspy mottled and modulated striations to precise mathematical linearity and onward into a maze of experimentation. We draw together in this course. I will instruct you to make specific marks on your paper. After which, you may elect to continue to work on your drawing for our Homework Assignment. The completed assignment may be entered into our dropbox for a slideshow and periodic critiques. Join us for the alchemy of adventurous spontaneity!
I am eager for our time together in this new paradigm of public art. The Drawing Galaxy awaits you!
