Nancy Campbell

Nancy Campbell grew up and has lived most of her life in the Catskills region of Upstate New York. The villages, woodlands, mountains, and valleys surrounding her fostered a deep appreciation and connection to the landscape. Landscape painting was and continues to be her favorite subject. She paints both from reference photos and in plein-air.

Nancy attended SUNY Ulster and began her long involvement with the Woodstock School of Art during the early 1980s when she began with a pastel class with the late Anna Contes, followed by several years learning watercolor painting with Staats Fasoldt. Four years living in Germany during the 1990s allowed her to visit many world-class museums in Europe where she was inspired to experiment with oil painting. She has taken various printmaking classes in the graphics studio at the school with Kate McGloughlin and other instructors. Most recently she has become a fan of the versatile medium of gouache (opaque watercolor). Gouache lends itself beautifully to rendering beautiful light effects, which play important roles in her paintings. With gouache, the artist can achieve the spontaneity and luminosity of watercolor with the forgiving nature of opaque media such as oil or acrylics.

Nancy and her husband Mike live in the village of Saugerties. She was Executive Director for 5 years at The Woodstock School of Art, from 2010-2015, and she has been a member of the school’s Board of Directors since 2015.
