ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

These workshops use still life to teach Zhang’s unique approach to art. This course is designed to help students gain mastery of all the elements in oil painting, from composition, values & color to brushwork and paint quality. Every session includes easel-to-easel instruction in challenges of proportion, form, perspective, and space that students may encounter in each setup.
Enrollment in both workshops is recommended but not required.

PART I STILL LIFE PAINTING
(need 6 stretched canvases 11×14 or 12×16 in size)

Tuesday-Value as related to entire painting: 1st week is a light painting, 2nd is dark
Wednesday-Temperature as related to entire painting: 1st is warm painting, 2nd is cold
Tuesday-Intensity as related to entire painting: 1st is strong color painting, 2nd is soft

Hongnian Zhang is a Chinese American oil painter who works in the Western academic tradition. Works by this gifted artist have been exhibited and acquired by museums, galleries, corporations and private collectors across the globe. In 2000, Zhang and his wife, artist Lois Woolley, co-wrote The Yin Yang of Painting. This book explains his philosophy and methods of painting. In 2008, China’s Ren-Min Mei-Shu Publishing Company selected Zhang as one artist in their Living Masters monograph series on Chinese Contemporary Distinguished Oil Painters. Hongnian Zhang has taught oil painting in America for many years, at both the graduate program of New York Academy and the Woodstock School of Art. Recently, Mr. Zhang accepted a position as Professor of Oil Painting at Fudan University’s Shanghai Institute of Visual Art. He is currently working with other Chinese artists to establish an Association for Epic and Historical Painting. He divides his time between China and the United States.

Please note that for workshops lasting all day there is a one-hour break from twelve noon to one PM. Students are invited to bring lunch and eat at the school or may go to any of the local dining establishments. The school does not provide lunch or refreshments.
