ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
This vivid exploration will embolden you to the thrill of conveying an abstract story by creating graphic dynamism through color, form and panel rhythm. Welcome to the revolutionary genre of our time that has captivated artists the world over and gained a significant worldwide audience.
In this workshop you will be presented with a history of abstract sequential art to current trends. Through several anthologies on the subject, I offer you a veritable feast of creative individuals and their work. You will join the ranks of these cutting edge pioneers by creating your own narrative. Whether a beginner or seasoned artist you will be all hands on board!
How exactly does one think about making an abstract sequential narrative?
Imagine an abstract form or an arrangement of forms. Take the arrangement and allow it to change from panel to panel. Pop colors with sharp, dark outlines surely add high drama, alluding to abstract comics. Or take that classic character, the blob, and watch it morph through the adventure you give it. Why can’t a triangle, empty thought bubble or cascade of loops offer a diaristic record of pictorial change and a record of the passage of time?
An abstract sequential narrative is a series of pictures telling a story. It is the transformation of a composition through time. It can be formally structural or loosely playful or both. You may reduce or alter the constraint of the panel grid. Graphic dynamism becomes un-tethered if you loosen the barriers and thus create a story without borders. From European zine publishers to Japanese Manga comics to American graphic novels you will join the avant-garde to create a flash point in the legendary trove of storytelling.
We employ all tools and media. I will demonstrate unusual tools and wet and dry material combinations to suit your pleasure.
