The Renaissance Technique of Silverpoint

Workshop

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:

Silverpoint – or Metalpoint – drawing flourished in the Renaissance but has seen limited use by artists since then. The technique, which involves preparing a toned paper surface, allowed artists like Albrecht Durer, Leonardo da Vinci and Jan van Eyck to create wonderfully subtle drawings with various metal points, often with white highlights.

In this workshop you will learn to create silverpoint paper and draw portraits using Renaissance methods. Metalpoint styluses and all other supplies will be provided. For the first half of the first day we will create the silverpoint paper that we will draw on, learn the Renaissance portrait technique and get to know the process. You may bring a mirror, selfies, or photos of friends and family and draw silverpoint self-portraits or portraits from these references. For the second half of the first day and the entire second day, we will draw Renaissance-style portraits from a model. You are also encouraged to bring your own ideas and references to transport this Renaissance technique into the 21st century.
