ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
This studio workshop will be most useful to pastel artists having some experience with the medium. The focus of this pastel workshop will be to create evocative landscape compositions using only natural landscape components.
Elizabeth’s mentoring will include daily morning demonstrations for participants to observe or they may choose to paint along with her. There will be individual attention and instruction available to all participants at their easels and daily “sharing” for constructive feedback. Techniques such as obtaining soft and hard edges, spacing, “glazing” with pastels and the use of graceful line will be addressed. Students will be encouraged to use studies they have made for reference and to take those or photos they have taken into the studio space for objective evaluation and feedback as to what adjustments might transform “what was there” into a single strong idea. There will be demonstrations, individual instruction, and daily “end of day sharing” for constructive feedback and possible solutions to problems. Participants will also be shown how to paint the same scene using a different palette that would suggest another season or time of day, or a different weather condition. Finally, students will learn how to critique their own work, a unique and much- requested presentation.
Suitable for all levels; no experience necessary! Ages 19+
Elizabeth Mowry is the Pastel Society of America 2009 Hall of Fame Honoree. She is a Master Pastelist in the Pastel of America and a Distinguished Pastelist in the Pastel Society of the West Coast. She was the 2003 American Guest of Honor at the Art of Pastel in France Exhibition. More recently, Elizabeth’s paintings garnered the “Best of Show in the Pastel Society of Colorado International Exhibition and also the Gold Medal in the pastel category of the Audubon Society at the Salmagundi Club in NYC.
Elizabeth is known primarily for her poetic imprint on nature that has to do with the introspective mood and spirit found within natural landscape components. Her paintings linger at the edge of closure as they pull the observer through a variety of landscape conditions to a place of quietude.
