ABOUT THIS COURSE:
“Before you start drawing, sit on your hands for 30 seconds”. This is the best advice anyone ever gave about drawing and painting. In order to be able to draw and paint from the figure you first need to learn to see. This class will take you through a sequential set of visual exercises. They will help you draw what you see and not what you think you see. When we draw and paint the figure our brain fools us into making marks that are not really there. We use images and symbols that we are familiar with, instead of using our natural ability for visual comparison.
We will work with movement and rhythm which is essential to bring the figure to life during longer drawing and painting sessions. We will work with negative shapes to help us with outline and foreshortening.
The class will work with charcoal, pencil, paint and we will even throw in some pastel and watercolor just to keep everyone on their toes. Moving from medium to medium will help us focus on the figure and keep us from being too stylized.
We will cover anatomy, including how to construct the head and torso. Breaking down the figure into basic building forms will help us come up with our own visual schematics. This will help us keep our drawing in proportion and realistic. We will also cover illustration from start to finish including how to take reference shots, using props, drawing the sketches and thumbnails and bringing it to a full rendered painting.
We will learn to sight measure and work with different color schemes and palettes. Starting with a limited palette and growing into a full spectrum palette.
This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to approach the figure. Great for beginning students looking to develop a portfolio as well as seasoned artists ready to challenge themselves with the human form. Each four week session builds upon the last but can also be taken on their own.
