Online Live Course
ABOUT THIS COURSE:
The American movements in art of Luminism and Tonalism concentrated on creating mood and an emotional response rather than an exact duplication of any subject. Edges of forms were kept soft, light became ethereal and glowingly luminous, shadows made mysterious, and atmosphere hazy. In this workshop we’ll work with these concepts and more to create paintings that are as enchantingly beautiful as they are poetically evocative. You may work in any drawing or painting medium, but Robert will be working in pastel, a medium appropriate for such effects. Learn to use a subject as a springboard of inspiration and for intuitive response in markmaking. Robert will show and discuss compositional ideas, light effects, use of color and more to foster our own creativity. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, you’re bound to be inspired as you learn stylistic concepts and practices. Robert will be working in pastel pencils and pastel sticks. You may choose to just watch or to sketch and paint along, step-by-step, with very popular instructor, Robert Carsten. Each week we will see examples and focus on a different subject, utilizing diverse approaches and techniques. Reference photos provided via email and Dropbox, where participants can also share zoomclass work or optional homework for written critique. All levels welcome.

Here is what our students are saying:
“Robert’s class is so stimulating. As always, he does such a fine job of illustrating his concept. It’s even clearer to me in these hour segments. The thing that really makes the difference using zoom is the opportunity for the student to see exactly what he’s doing as he does it. One can even enlarge it to see minute details, while in a class setting you’re so far back or not in the best space to see just what’s being done. Huge difference.”
“This was a fabulous class! It’s what I’ve been looking for to enable me to free up and concentrate on SHAPES! I started something and it’s got such a different feel right from the start. Thank you again for being such a special teacher.”
“Only a teacher of your caliber could inspire such expertise by so many showing such diversity and beauty. Thank you so much.”
