Kate McGloughlin, Landscape

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Kate McGloughlin’s Simplifying the Landscape Workshops help painters navigate the visual pitfalls and stumbling blocks that can make painting on location overwhelming. This course was designed to help artists simplify their approach to landscape painting, and learn the practical aspects of painting in the field.

Each Wednesday during the summer in Woodstock, NY, a group of artists meet at a bucolic, private location to capture the essence of place creating meaningful sketch book entries by using a system of visual interpretation using three values and three main shapes to achieve the greatest visual impact in whichever medium they choose. Frequent discussions about design, composition, color and intention keep the class lively and informative.

In this plein air painting class, artists experience some of the most magnificent views in the Catskill Mountains and Hudson Valley, and will work in a collegial environment with demonstrations, easel critiques and personalized attention.

McGloughlin’s ancestral family were the first white settlers in Ulster County, and she has been painting on the farms and in the meadows and woodland hills here for thirty five years, continuing the centuries old tradition of landscape painting that Thomas Cole, Frederick Church and Asher Durand started in the  Hudson River School and that Birge Harrison, John F. Carlson and Frank Swift Chase made famous in the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting.

McGloughlin has had twelve solo exhibitions and has been included in over 80 group shows in the US, Ireland, and Japan, and is represented in permanent collections at The Dorsky Museum, The Schenectady Museum, The Herbert  F. Johnson Museum and The Woodstock Artists Association and Museum. She teaches Printmaking and Landscape Painting at The Woodstock School of Art, Woodstock, NY. As Co-founder of Destination Arts Creative Workshops, she teaches travel workshops for artists in Mexico, Italy, Spain and Ireland.
