ABOUT THIS CLASS:
This series of classes is designed for people intending to apply for art school or to be art majors at the college or university level, but it is open to anyone who might be interested.
Art class in high school provides a valuable contribution to the development of a portfolio, but it is unlikely to be provide everything that’s required; the limited time available for the subject is a factor. In any case, art schools expect prospective students to include work done outside of the school-room. In addition to seeing a portfolio that says something about the student, Art schools want to see a portfolio that shows an interest in experimentation in different kinds of media, different styles, and on different subjects. The portfolio should show that the student is open to all kinds of creative solutions to all kinds of questions including “visually approaching a single question 100 different ways” (Portfolio advice from Pratt School of Art). In this course, we will aim to take that visual journey of approaching a single object in as many ways as time allows. In addition, the project can act as a template for the student to use in their own artistic inquiries going forward.
The course consists of four classes. In the first two classes, the instructor will guide students in the study of Still Life objects working from direct observation and, through that, build and hone their skills in drawing in charcoal, graphite, and pastel. In the second pair of classes, students will explore how an image can be simplified and deconstructed to create abstract compositions through cut-paper and collage. Throughout students will be introduced to artists in 20th century art history and how they found solutions to the question posed: How to construct, then deconstruct and transform a Still Life work.
Over the 4 weeks in the studio, students will explore a range of media, build skills in a range of art techniques, and be exposed to art concepts and relevant art historical figures.
