ABOUT THIS CLASS
This class introduces the essentials of working in the pastel medium. We will sample various forms of soft pastel available in the marketplace, general availability, and working qualities. Equally important is the choice of support, and students will explore working with a variety of surfaces. In the studio, students will analyze photographs for their compositional possibilities, and/or use their own sketches to apply composition, value, and color principles. We will address editing the landscape, and applying determined changes to the initial images. Looking at historical and contemporary pastel works, students will be encouraged to try various methods of application, while developing their own style with this medium.
The first part of each class will be discussion of materials &/or techniques, with a demonstration, after which students will work at their own pace with help at the easel. Informal inclusive critiques will be ongoing as each student progresses.
This is the perfect opportunity for the student to discover their affinity for the medium, and the textures they are most comfortable working with. Suitable for all levels who want a firm knowledge base in this immediate medium.
Suitable for all levels; no experience necessary! Ages 16+
