Line informs our lives whether we are standing in one or regarding double lines dividing our highways. For artists, a line becomes virtually an autograph. Drawn lines can be rough and tumble, notably exact, tinged with perforation, zigzagged into repetitive pattern, floating merrily in open space, densely layered into geometric configurations or meandering lazily in tidy script.
Art history is rife with the revelry of line. From Surrealist automatic writing to the scribbles of Cy Twombly, the raw looping of Jackson Pollock, the laborious grids of Agnes Martin to the current restless entanglements of Julie Mehretu. The quirkiness of line enthralls artists the world over.
Consider the raw materials employed by artists in their linear gestures. Vying for attention are rivers of ink, strands of watercolor, fuzzy trails of graphite, thread stitched onto paper, wire plunging through space, pastel surges or the superimposition of pencil. All of which can carry a vision of grace, tension, leisure, rage or sensitivity.
This one-day workshop reflects the focus of diversity in the mesmerizing world of line. Your individual “portraits” of dialogue with line are your autographs of observation, discovery and invention.

To address COVID concerns and ensure the safety of all, the WSA Board of Directors requires all students, instructors and staff be fully vaccinated before coming to the school campus and to be masked at all times in the office and studios. All studio classes and workshops will have reduced number of students and maintain social distancing. Additionally, air purification systems have been installed in all of the studios, office and gallery.

Please note that for workshops lasting all day there is a one-hour break from twelve noon to one PM. Students are invited to bring lunch and eat at the school or may go to any of the local dining establishments. The school does not provide lunch or refreshments.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Meredith Rosiér creates drawings that reflect her examination of the interaction between exactitude and vagueness. So to sustain the apprehension of the picture plane and to slow the process of categorical recognition, she courts the dialogue of abstraction.
Rosier has studied drawing at Yale University School of Art, and was awarded a full scholarship for the Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. She was mentored by Jacob Landau until his death and by Irving Petlin of Paris, France. She was awarded residencies to The Winchester School of Art, Winchester, England; The Tangier American Legation Museum, Tangier, Morocco; The Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont and The Lacoste School of Art, Lacoste Vaucluse, France.
Her work is exhibited internationally and is represented by Kentler International Drawing Space, Brooklyn, NY.
Her drawings reside in museum collections such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Weatherspoon Art Museum (Dillard Collection of Art on Paper), Greensboro, North Carolina; Arkansas Museum of Art (Drawing Collection), Little Rock, Arkansas; Italian Consulate Collection, Italy; and The Tangier American Legation Museum, Tangier, Morocco. She is the Recipient of the Sally Jacobs/Phoebe Towbin Award, Woodstock Artists Association and Museum, Woodstock, New York.
Her curatorial expertise continues to add to the cultural conversation regarding Abstraction as she creates exhibitions near and far. To further her championship of abstract drawing, Rosier founded The Drawing Galaxy Website in 2009. Comprised of over 40 artists, this endeavor is dedicated to those who delve into abstraction as a primary language.
Her work has garnered numerous awards and in 2015, she was presented with The National Association of Women Artists Genius Award. In 2019, she won The National Award for Cutting Edge Artwork, New York City, New York.
