Cut Paper and Mixed Media

Studio Class

ABOUT THIS CLASS:

Expanding on Jenne’s Cut and Painted Paper class, this course continues the theme of creating a balance between playful experimentation and careful study of composition. We will start out discussing composition- studying the work of masters such as Titian, Vermeer and Cezanne and compare them to modern works of art. Students will begin by painting loosely on paper, applying color and texture using palette knives, sponges as well as traditional brushes. They will cut up their painted papers and begin rearranging them along with magazine cuttings etc. in order to study composition. As we dig deeper, we will discuss methods of creating a sense of movement, excitement and energy in students’ work. Students may choose to expand on these concepts, moving on to mixed media and working with a variety of materials on wood panels. A free exchange of ideas, exploration and discovery is the goal in this casual work environment.

PLEASE NOTE -This is an excellent class for printmakers who wish to utilize their extra prints by cutting up and repurposing them.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Jenne M. Currie, the daughter of two painters, Ethel Magafan and Bruce Currie, was born and raised in Woodstock, NY. She moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League and soon after began fabricating welded steel sculptures and doing bronze casting in Pietrasanta, Italy. In later years, she began working with painted wooden wall sculpture, fusing cut and assembled shapes with her love of color. Currently she alternates between this medium, two dimensional painted paper collages and straight up painting on wooded panels. For the past few years, Jenne has conducted workshops for adults at the Art Students League of NY and the Woodstock School of Art. Jenne has exhibited her work in numerous Manhattan venues such as the National Academy, Seligmann Galleries, Carnegie Hall and Salander-O’Reilly Gallery as well as Silvermine Guild in New Canaan, Ct., Boscobel Manor in Garrison, NY and the Schenectady Museum of Art. Jenne is currently represented by the Buster Levi Gallery in Cold Spring, NY.
