Studio Class
ABOUT THIS CLASS:
Aside from exemplifying what is possible, abstract drawing is fun. This class offers a joy ride for both a beginner and a seasoned artist. We wend through an alternate tool and materials universe towards the creation of a personal visual tale. From the delight of the doodle to the mighty power of line to densities of pigment, the endeavor of abstract drawing is analogous to prospecting for surprises. What could be more irresistible?
As an instructor my experience demonstrates that each individual artist, in a singular imaginative space, can wield an arsenal of tools and pigment to present compelling work reflecting a contemporary vision.
You will have the directness and intrigue that beckons the moment hand and tool touch the surface. Each week, I present abstraction from international artist books to view and discuss formal elements such as line quality, movement, form and color.
We acquire the language of abstraction through looking, drawing and discussing its striking and thrilling complexity.
I encourage exploration. No risk, no fun! It takes moxie and when you have moxie you need the tools to match.
We utilize pencils, stumps, erasers, dirt, dry and/or oil pastel, graphite, cold wax, crayons, oil stick, collage to name just a few and on various surfaces from paper to vellum to cardboard to fabric. We sand, score, burn and perforate. With pleasure, I offer demonstrations of unusual ways to utilize materials. From delicate, velvety wisps to raspy mottled and modulated striations to precise mathematical linearity and onward into a maze of experimentation, we add logic and error. I find logic and error to be vibrant partners and I suspect you will too.
Imagine your marks to perhaps include graphite swirls, geometric ordering, yellow orbs, ribbon like curves, rust on burned paper, arcs of blue, linear tangles, luminosity, and rhythmic gesture. This is the alchemy of adventurous spontaneity where artists create their unique works of art.

Here is what our students are saying:
“Meredith is a joyful instructor! Her class is the best art class I have ever taken.”
“The Zoom format works well and the structure of the class is perfect. Living in Scarsdale, it’s so much easier to stay connected to the art community than trying to get up to Woodstock for a weekend. The recordings make it doubly convenient!”
“Meredith is an extremely organized dedicated teacher who spends beyond the allotted time to provide support and education to each of us. She is a gem.”
“I am impressed with the quality of instruction. Meredith is excellent!”
