ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
The vivid exploration of Comic Abstraction is sure to embolden you to the thrill of creating graphic dynamism through color, form and panel rhythm. Welcome to the revolutionary genre of our time that has captivated artists the world over and gained a significant worldwide audience.
In one day you will be presented with a history of abstract sequential art to current trends. I will introduce you to notables Andrei Molotiu, the Belgian Cobra Group and Spyros Horemis. Through anthologies on the subject, I offer you a veritable feast of creative individuals who have led the way to this ambiguous genre of our time.
You will join the ranks of the cutting edge pioneers by creating your own abstract comics. Whether a beginner or seasoned artist you will be all hands on board.
How exactly can one think about making an abstract comic?
Imagine an abstract form or an arrangement of forms. Draw this arrangement and give it some drama! Pop colors with sharp and dark outlines surely add high drama. Add another form in each panel. Or take that classic character, the blob, and watch it morph through the adventure you give it. Why can’t a triangle, empty thought bubble or cascade of loops have a vivid life independent of representational characters?
In a way, making an abstract comic is a translation and re-modeling of a composition into something formally exotic, structural or a hallucinatory gift of mischief. We specialize in transformation. Either through sequential or non-sequential abstract imagery, your tale will cohere into a personal narrative. You may reduce or alter the constraint of the panel grid. Graphic dynamism becomes un-tethered if you decide to loosen the barriers and thus create a story without borders. Whether spare or populated by crowded oddities, your creation will be a unique addition to the legendary trove of abstract comics.
We employ all tools and media. I will demonstrate unusual tools and wet and dry material combinations to suit your pleasure.
From European zine publishers to Japanese Manga comics to American graphic novels you will join the avant-garde to create a flash point of ambiguity where wittiness prevails.
Suitable for all levels; no experience necessary! Ages 19+
