Color Mixing

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

This three-day workshop is designed to develop and hone skills in color identification; mixing from primaries and mixtures; matching color; and creating dynamic and harmonious color compositions. Color-mixing exercises that build upon each other reveal principles of creating color, including hue, value, temperature, and tone. Discussion will include color compositions that are subtle or bright; high contrast or low; monochromatic, analogous or complementary; and flat, gradated, or layered. The knowledge gained will allow artists to incorporate into their work an understanding of where the mixtures that we use come from; how to mix anything from primaries; and how to critique and improve a palette using applied problem-solving to enhance an intuitive color sense.

Open to painters in any medium; printmakers, and pastellists.

Following up on principles learned on the first two days, on the third day we will put these into immediate practice. Emphasizing creating and critiquing the palette before starting a painting and color juxtapositions within, students will have the opportunity to integrate new color information into their own style of painting. The third day is open to all students who have taken any of my color-mixing workshops.

Suitable for all levels; no experience necessary! Ages 16+

A mid-career artist, Christie Scheele has been painting devotedly since receiving her BFA in 1980, and began exhibiting and selling her work in 1985. While getting her BFA, she spent a year on fellowship at the Royal Academy of Fine Art and the University Complutense of Madrid in 1978-79.

She started painting her atmospheric, minimalist landscapes just before moving to the Catskills from New York City in 1990. As a non-regional landscape painter, Ms. Scheele paints images, in her signature style, of all of the places she has ever been. Among her favorite locales are the beaches and marshes of the Northeast, the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains, and the highways and bridge views of the Hudson Valley and New York City metro area. These meditative pieces cross the boundaries between traditional realism and the contemporary art world, reaching the viewer’s heart without sentimentality or melodrama.

As a full-time, painter, Christie Scheele’s work has been collected nationally and internationally by hundreds of private and public collectors.

In an effort to maintain our non-toxic environment, the Woodstock School of Art  does not permit the use of turpentine or mineral spirits in the painting studios. Additionally, please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne or scents of any kind. Learn more.
