ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
These three separate two day Color & Energy Workshops with instructor Karen O’Neil are designed to feed a painter’s creative engine. The workshops are visual energy boosters for painters. Each workshop is a stress free, luxurious two day time frame to energize, visualize, and bring personal color vocabulary to a painting.
Students are encouraged to use large brushes and see form as large masses of color and value. Keeping the spontaneity and freshness in a painting is key. Working quickly and decisively, not overworking.
Interesting and challenging still life set ups with diverse painting issues will be provided. Students are encouraged to:
- adopt demonstrated methods of keeping colors clean and brilliant
- employ careful observation as opposed to relying on formulas
- see color first, subject after
- learn to identify and mix neutral and gray colors
- identify value
- simplify form into planes of color and value
- develop a heightened awareness of color, and develop a personal color language
- develop sensitivity to subtle shifts of warm or cool notes within a color
- compose a work using both traditional and contemporary ideas
- resolve problems in a painting by looking at and considering all options, thinking and seeing “outside the box”
- be aware of intent, attitude and energy transfer in a painting
- find out what sparks imagination, and build a composition around it
All skill levels are welcome in these three workshops. The still life subject matter varies by the season in each workshop. Advanced students are welcome to bring in independent projects, or bring set ups that reflect an advanced understanding of the painting issues covered in the workshop.
No experience necessary! Ages 16+

In an effort to maintain our non-toxic environment, the Woodstock School of Art does not permit the use of turpentine or mineral spirits in the painting studios. Additionally, please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, or scents of any kind. Learn more.
Karen O’Neil studied in Provincetown with Henry Hensche in 1983. Painting block studies that summer in the brilliant light of Provincetown changed O’Neil’s life as a painter. Learning how to see is a skill that a painter develops over time. (“You look, but you don’t see”) was one of Henry Hensche’s many pearls of painterly wisdom.

Please note that for workshops lasting all day there is a one-hour break from twelve noon to one PM. Students are invited to bring lunch and eat at the school or may go to any of the local dining establishments. The school does not provide lunch or refreshments.
