ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:
Based on David Hornung’s textbook Color: A Workshop for Artists and Designers, this workshop marries fundamental color theory with studio practice. It is designed to give you a deeper understanding of color and the confidence to use it in your work. Step by step, through a series of small, carefully guided assignments you will explore the structure and inter-relational nature of color. You will get to know color essentials through illustrated lectures, demonstrations, and the clear discussion of class work. This informative and relaxed course is an excellent choice for quilters, surface designers, painters, graphic designers, and anyone who makes two-dimensional art.
Using simple painting and gluing techniques, student make a series of small studies that explore the visual structure and psychological impact of color.
Students will gain the understanding and confidence to analyze color in works of art and employ it in their own work.
Recommended for intermediate and advanced artists. Ages 20+

In an effort to maintain our non-toxic environment, the Woodstock School of Art does not permit the use of turpentine or mineral spirits in the painting studios. Learn more.
Those with special needs and/or requests may email the registrar.
Please note that for workshops lasting all day there is a one-hour break from twelve noon to one PM. Students are invited to bring lunch and eat at the school or may go to any of the local dining establishments. The school does not provide lunch or refreshments.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
David Hornung is a painter and collage artist whose work has been widely exhibited. He holds a BA in art from the University of Delaware and an MFA in painting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Over the course of a long teaching career, he has served on faculties at Indiana University, Skidmore College, Adelphi University, and The Rhode Island School of Design. He is the author of Color: A Workshop for Artists and Designers (Laurence King Pub Ltd.), a textbook that has been translated into six languages and is used in art schools and private studios around the world. The third edition was published in September 2020.
For the past 10 years David has been teaching art workshops in the US and abroad. Elizabeth Ferrill, the artistic director of painting, drawing, and printmaking at Anderson Ranch has written, “David is a skilled teacher who is able to teach to all levels, from beginner to advanced. He is a clear communicator, and his kindness causes even the most tentative student to feel at ease and gain confidence.”
