A Sense of Trees

Workshop

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:

Whether in full leaf of summer, colorful garb of autumn, stark nakedness of winter or gauzy softness of spring, trees are a glorious, integral component of our landscape and our very existence on this planet.

We observe trees so frequently in our daily lives. Yet, it  is surprisingly challenging to convey them in a convincing manner in our paintings, particularly when working with a medium as fluid—and at times unruly—as encaustics.

During our Sense of Trees sessions, we’ll explore ways in which we can use an understanding of tree growth and branching patterns to move away from awkward renditions of trees towards techniques that allow us to evoke their elegant beauty using encaustics, India inks, and oil Pigment Sticks.

An excellent way to prepare for our session is to do close observation of trees throughout the seasons and, if you have time, do sketches of trees, branches, and twigs.  You will find those studies enormously helpful. You might also begin gathering twigs and branches to bring with you for further study and exploration during our workshop.

Please note that this class is designed for artists who either have taken introductory encaustic classes or have some experience working with encaustics. Ages 16+

Skills to be developed:

  • Building a deeper understanding of tree structure and branching to inform mark-making
  • Utilizing the unique properties of encaustics to convey a sense of trees
  • Working oils over an encaustic base
  • Utilizing oils, oil Pigment Sticks, and India inks with encaustic paints
  • Building encaustic layers that allow for exciting results when carving and scraping back

Please note that this class is designed for artists who either have taken introductory encaustic classes or have some experience working with encaustics. Ages 16+

This workshop is in collaboration with R&F Handmade Paints.
