Workshop
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:
The liminal spaces between night and day, the visceral tension of an impending storm—moments when even the most familiar places in our natural surroundings take on a sense of mystery—these will serve as our starting points as we explore the use of encaustic paints and India inks to evoke a sense of place. During our sessions, we will explore what it is about a certain place at a certain time that lingers in our senses and flickers in our mind’s eye, and how to evoke that sense of place in an abstract encaustic landscape painting.
Encaustics involve building up and scraping back—processes akin to an archaeological dig, not unlike the experience of bringing an elusive, partially-remembered visual memory into focus.
Skills to be developed:
● Utilizing the unique properties of encaustics to convey a sense of place
● Building encaustic layers that allow for exciting results when carving and scraping back
● How to create a sense of atmosphere through effective encaustic layering
● Skillful use of encaustic texture to support abstraction
● Utilizing India inks with encaustic paints
Suitable for students with at least some prior experience working with encaustics or who have taken an introductory encaustic class. Ages 16+
