ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:

This workshop is for both those who have never carved before and those with carving experience who would like to learn about direct carving. The workshop will teach students to carve wood using a hammer and chisels…the same tools that have served carvers through the centuries. Students will learn to create sculpture, whether figurative or abstract, by carving directly into wood without the use of models or maquettes. The workshop will include instruction on how the natural properties of the wood can and should influence the process of the work.

In this class we will work on our skills of observation, sculpting the figure from direct observation of a live model. Put simply, that means learning how to look at what you are sculpting and to sculpt what you are looking at. That sounds really obvious but it is the most common mistake made by art students. Sometimes consciously and very often unconsciously we start to sculpt ideas about what we are looking at instead of what we are actually looking at. It is a very relaxed and fun process. All students receive individualized attention according to their personal needs and skill level. In addition you will learn basic hand building techniques for clay and how to measure proportions in head lengths.

In this class you will learn basic hand-building skills for working with clay (water-based). Students will choose their own subject matter (an animal, mythical creature, self portrait…..whatever you like) and are encouraged to bring photographic references or objects to work from.

This class is designed to teach carving techniques to students of all levels and age groups, in a supportive environment. Skills taught in class will include how to choose a stone, the use of tools, and the art of polishing. Students will be guided through the process of designing a piece, from rough carving to modeling and finishing. Emphasis will be on encouraging students to find their own style and pursue their own vision.
