ABOUT THIS CLASS
Do you want to learn drawing or painting? Refresh your skills? Or maybe just need a push to get your expressive nature going? If so, this is the class for you!
I believe that there are basic concepts and skills that anyone wanting to express themselves in drawing or painting should have regardless of style or expressive goal. Students will be given initial instruction in basis drawing… a painless method I’ve used with great success over many years of teaching. This requires learning to represent “things” seen or imagined as a three dimensional form on a two dimensional surface (paper or canvas). Students will be introduced to these from the very first class and will be referred to throughout the course, so make sure to have a sketchbook and pencil for the first class session.
Bring along any examples of your artwork or ideas that would help me to see your preferences in style or content (What artists do you admire? What style interests you?) . We will assess the concepts and skills you have and what you want to get out of the class. My teaching methods are tailored to the needs of each student, so progress will be at the student’s own pace. I provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere in which to work. Critiques will be an important tool used to gauge progress and trouble-shoot problems in your work and help you grow as an artist. Impromptu demonstrations will be used as part of instruction both individually and in groups.
Students will work from subject matter that inspires them whether it be still-life, landscape or people (from life, reference photos or both). After preliminary instruction the students may choose to work with oils, acrylics or watercolor. Preparation, materials needed and painting techniques will be taught with the specific qualities and advantages of each medium in mind. Color mixing and theory will be at the center of painting instruction along with design strategies, composition and problem-solving techniques in all media. I am a fan of the “KISS” technique… keep it simple students!
Suitable for all levels; no experience necessary!
